Mary Louise Slater, age 87, of Neoga, Illinois passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at the Heartland Senior Living Center in Neoga, Illinois. She was born on August 17, 1932 in Bond Township in Lawrence County, Illinois, the daughter of Amasa Scofield and Lena Irene (Longnecker) McCarty.
Mary attended Maple Grove Grade School and Lawrenceville Township High School, before completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Greenville College and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education graduated from Northern Colorado University. She taught in public schools for 15 years and completed her teaching career at the New Hebron Christian School near Robinson, Illinois.
As a farmer’s daughter, Mary learned early in life to nurture the land that sustains us in return. Mary loved to play the piano and at times served to accompany the congregation in songs of praise at the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church. In her later years, she found pleasure in expressing home-spun prose and poetry, even self-publishing ‘Mary’s Memories and Maxims’.
On December 26, 1964, she joined in Holy Matrimony with Kelly Eugene Slater at the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church. They served as house parents for two years in a children’s group home and enjoyed traveling in their active years. Together they shared their love for each other and led lives in service to others as guided by their faith in God.
Preceding her in death were her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Kelly.
