Kathryn “Janet” Asbell Obituary

Kathryn “Janet” Asbell, age 82, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023, at BridgePointe Health Campus in Vincennes, Indiana. She was born on December 16, 1941, in Arkansas City, Kansas, the daughter of William E. and Audrey (Marshall) Stone. She married William “Bill” E. Asbell on October 16, 1995, and he survives.

Janet was a 1959 graduate of Arkansas City High School; and attended both Arkansas City Junior College in Arkansas City, Kansas and Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kansas. She married Ted Hollembeak in 1963. During this marriage she had two children, Libby and Nathan, and they lived in Emporia, Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, and Goddard, Kansas. She found herself in various jobs over the years; most notably the ticket office at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas, the business office of Newman’s Dept. Store and in accounts receivable for Dolly Madison both in Emporia, Kansas. She was on the initial planning group and a volunteer for S.O.S. in Emporia, Kansas, as well as a planner and volunteer for the Emporia Twin Rivers Festival. Janet was an artist, and dabbled in many hobbies including photography, gardening, sewing, and crafting. She loved competing in (and winning) Halloween costume contests, shopping, attending her granddaughter’s dance recitals, attending the Nutcracker Ballet, making sugar cookies at Christmas time, watching old movies, and listening to Elvis. When she was able, she visited her family in Prairie Village, Kansas and Bill’s family in California as much as possible. Janet never tired of wanting to go, do and have fun.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Barbara Stone; and her son, Nathan Hollembeak.

Survivors include her husband, Bill; her daughter, Libby Cunningham and husband, Doug, of Prairie Village, Kansas; her twin brother, W. G. “Jerry” Stone of Houston, Texas; one sister, Virginia “Carol” Morris of Cushing, Oklahoma; and one granddaughter, Isabelle Cunningham.

No local or formal services will be conducted at this time. Inurnment will be conducted in the Hope Cemetery in Arkansas City, Arkansas. Memorial donations may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois is in charge of the arrangements.
