John Carter Obituary

John Ray Carter, age 71, of Lawrenceville, Illinois passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at his residence. He was born on March 25, 1949 in Greeneville, Tennessee, the son of Henry and Wanda (Pleasant) Carter.

John was a retired trucker, diesel mechanic, and farmer. He worked for ABF Trucking and Tussey Trucking. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His hobbies included gardening, camping, fishing, and watching NASCAR. In later years, John and Darlene enjoyed traveling to Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Terry Carter and Ronnie Carter.

Survivors include his best friend and companion, Darlene Hawkins of Lawrenceville, Illinois; four daughters, Rhonda Stegall and husband, Charlie of St. Anne, Illinois, Jennifer Pierce and husband, Robert of Chatham, Illinois, April Sexton and husband, Sean of Findlay, Ohio, and Valerie Elder and husband, Andy of Robinson, Illinois; three brothers, Donnie Carter and wife, Sue of Rochelle, Illinois, Henry ‘Jr.’ Carter of Creston, Illinois, and Robert Carter of Sprötau, Germany; two sisters, Diane Hilderbrand of Kent, Washington and Teresa Deinst of Maple Park, Illinois; and nine grandchildren, Timothy Stegall, Megan Stegall, Joseph Stegall, Joshua Dooley, Blake Dooley, Bradley Sexton, Logan Sexton, Katie Elder, and Aiden Elder.

The body will be cremated and no formal services will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you do something kind or helpful for someone. Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois is in charge of the arrangements.
