Ferne "Sam" Griggs

Ferne Vee “Sam" Griggs, age 93, of Sumner, Illinois passed away Monday, May 30, 2022 at his daughter’s residence in Sumner, Illinois. He was born December 13, 1928 in Lawrence County, Illinois, the son of Everett Earl and Lola Bernice (Tyer) Griggs. On August 30, 1952 he married Loretta May Arnold. She preceded him in death on April 28, 1996.

Sam worked as Foreman for Marblehead Lime Company in Thornton, Illinois for several years until retirement. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid fisherman, and hunter, and enjoyed gardening. He loved bird watching, especially hummingbirds and the song birds.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one son, Russell; and three sisters.

He is survived by three children, Vicki Harmon and her husband, Bob of Sumner, Illinois, Steven Griggs of Sommerset, Kentucky, and Nancy Liberman and her husband, Michael of Sumner, Illinois; two brothers, Francis “Frank” Griggs and his wife, Janelle of Branson, MO and Delbert “Del” Griggs of Sumner, Illinois; one sister, Marlene Berry of Olney, Illinois; 11 grandchildren, Vincent, Phillip and Elizabeth Harmon, Shawn Dunn, April Hayes, Cody Griggs, Kali Griggs, Zachery, Kathryn, Jessica, and Madalyn Liberman; 15 great-grandchildren, Dawson, Ivelisse, Stephen, Bryce, Savannah, Tyler, Maddy, Kelsey, Lyndsey, Sophie, Allyson, Anabel, Colsen, Ford and Isla; and one great-great-grandchild, Aspyn.  

The funeral will be Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2:00pm CDT at the Sivert-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Sumner, Illinois, and may be viewed with the following link: https://www.facebook.com/emmonsmaceysteffey. Visitation will also be Saturday from 12:00pm until the service hour of 2:00pm CDT. Burial will be at the Sumner Cemetery with Military Rites.
