Clement Buchanan

July 25, 1917 — December 15, 2012

Early in the morning of December 15, 2012, Clement Irwin Buchanan passed away, departing to be with Christ, his Lord and Savior. Clement Buchanan was born at home in Lawrence County on July 25, 1917. He was the fifth child of Ralph Earnest Buchanan and Gertrude Beckwith Buchanan. There were nine children born into this home, Ralph Earnest II, Jennie Beckwith, Ura Vernon, Warner Knight (Jack), Clement Irwin, Eunice, Fannie Lu, Martha Lois and Rowland Griffith. Of the nine children, there are presently two siblings that survive, Eunice Klassen of Aberdeen, Idaho and Fannie Turton of Congerville, Illinois. On August 6, 1943 Clement married Mina Van Holstyn from Grand Rapids, Michigan. There were 6 children born to this union, Douglas, Joan, Arthur, Rebecca, Eileen, and Rose. Their infant daughter whom they called "Becky", died at 9 months of age. Clement and his beloved wife Mina dedicated their lives to provide for their children, not with material benefits, but with a firm foundation in Biblical principles. They passed their 69th anniversary together and have known personally all 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Farming was the life-long profession of Clement. He farmed in the southern part of Lawrence County where his early ancestors settled. More and more in his later years, he spent his time in Bible teaching throughout Latin America. His mission field included the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico and Brazil. Clement died peacefully at the full age of 95 years. His impact as a faithful man of God proved an example to his family and many others. He is survived and sorely missed by his beloved wife, Mina. Funeral services will be at 2 pm, Thursday December 20, at the Emmons-Macy and Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, followed by burial at the Buchanan cemetery. Visitation is to preceed the funeral beginning at 12 noon.
