Betty Ruth Alsman, age 88, of rural Lawrenceville, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013, at the United Methodist Village-North Campus. She was born November 12, 1924, in Bicknell, Indiana, the daughter of Silas W. Phillippe and Martha (Goodman) Phillippe who preceded her in death, along with two brothers and two sisters.
Betty married Richard C. Alsman of Bicknell, on September 21, 1944 and for 25 years they owned and operated the Rexall Drug Store in Lawrenceville until Richard's death in 1989. To this marriage was born a son, Richard Philip Alsman who preceded her in death in 1995. Betty married William A. Cabaniss who also preceded her in death.
Betty was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church where she served in several capacities such as Sunday school teacher, United Methodist Women's Choir, and Circle Leader. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood for 40 years.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Alsman, of Lawrenceville; one step-daughter Janet Cabaniss of Lexington, KY; two grandchildren, Kris Chelsvig of Jacksonville, IL and Abbi LeBeane of Danville, Il; and six great-grandchildren, Haley and Emma Chelsvig, Kelsey, Reese, Quincey, and Hadley London LeBeane. Also surviving is a foreign exchange student Roar Grottvik of Norway who has remained part of the family since living with the Alsmans during the school year of 1971.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM Sunday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Lawrenceville City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville or the American Heart Association.
