Walter Melvin Crackel

Walter Melvin "Mel" Crackel, of Terre Haute, IN, (formerly of Lawrenceville, IL) passed away Monday, February 04, 2013, in Terre Haute, IN. He was born February 18, 1915 in Belmont, IL, the son of Allen and Laura Eliza (Weisenberger) Crackel. He married Wanda Ridenour on November 1, 1941 and she died November 16,1988. Mel owned and operated Crackel's Grocery. He also worked for various grocery stores such as Buy-Low and Neeley's Key Market, was an insurance salesman and prepared income taxes for individuals before his retirement. Mel was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Marines, having served during WWII. Mel was a Sunday School teacher and served as Sunday School Superintendent. Preceding Mel in death were his parents, one brother George Crackel and one sister Mildred Shaw. Survivors include one son Bradley Crackel and wife Nancy of Terre Haute, IN, two grandchildren, Jennifer (Jay) Kellett and Bradley Crackel, Jr., along with three great-grandchildren Jensen, Jaycee, and Jolee Kellett. Funeral services will be 11 AM (CST) Friday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, IL. Burial will be in Lawrenceville City Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 AM (CST) Friday at the funeral home.
