Virginia ‘Ginny’ E. Dieckgrafe

Virginia ‘Ginny’ E. Dieckgrafe, age 92, of Bloomington, Illinois passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Westminster Village in Bloomington, Illinois. She was born on April 21, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Samuel C. and May (Licklider) Gossom. She married Robert E. Dieckgrafe on June 15, 1957, and he preceded her in death on February 02, 2003.

Ginny graduated from University High School in 1940 and from Central College-Central Methodist University in 1953, with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and physical education. She taught 4th grade at McKnight School in University City for four years. She moved to Port Arthur, Texas when she got married, and taught elementary physical education for three years at Sam Houston School, until they were transferred to Houston, Texas. She started the school year off in high school girl’s physical education, and substituted in every level and subject in the Spring Branch Memorial School District. After Texas, Ginny and Bob moved to Lockport, Illinois, Lawrenceville, Illinois, and San Pedro Sula, Honduras, before returning to Lawrenceville, Illinois. She was a volunteer at the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital; and a member of the Second Tuesday Bridge Club, the Lawrenceville Garden Club, and the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, where she served as an Elder, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; one sister, May VanGels; two brothers-in-law, Richard VanGels and Roger Dieckgrafe, one sister-in-law, Floy Dieckgrafe, and two nieces, Gale Cruts and Kathleen Cain.

Survivors include two daughters, Dawn E. Dieckgrafe of Bloomington, Illinois and Susan E. Honiotes of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two grandchildren, Audrey and Ayers; one sister-in-love; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 809 12th Street, Lawrenceville, Illinois, on October 15, 2022 at 11:00 am CDT. A visitation will be conducted starting at 10:00 am CDT in the Parlor Room at First Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville. The family requests everyone to wear Ginny’s favorite color, red. A private burial will be conducted. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, Sign of the Kingdom-East, or the Lawrence County Humane Society. Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois is in charge of the arrangements.
