Vernadine Elaine Krober, 99, of Lawrenceville, Illinois passed away May 4, 2015, in her home. She was born April 5, 1916, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, the daughter of Oscar and Wilma (Millsap) Allen.
Vernadine graduated from Lawrenceville High School, where she was editor of the Toma Talk and received a medal for her four years of Latin Study. She also graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in Library Science. She was a school teacher at Hutton School and also a homemaker. When her second husband, Orland Krober, a research chemist at the University of Illinois, accepted a two year assignment with the USAID in India, Vernadine learned Hindi and worked with library services for children. After their return from India, Vernadine Brailled texts, tests, research papers, and even a cook book for blind students and faculty. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church for over 70 years, where she taught Sunday school and led youth programs. She was also a Girl Scouts volunteer and a volunteer at nursing homes.
Preceding Vernadine in death were her parents; first husband, Leland S. Cloud; second husband, Orland A. Krober; and two brothers, Ona Allen and William Allen.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Levine of Lawrenceville, Illinois; two step-sons, Alfred Krober of Rochester, New York and Dr. Marvin Krober of Tacoma, Washington; two grandchildren, Charles Levine of San Diego, California and Christiane Levine of Atlanta, Georgia; three step-grandchildren, Alan Krober of Oahu, Hawaii, Dr. Janet Krober of Tacoma, Washington, and Mary Jang of Tacoma, Washington; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to a sharing time/brunch on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11:30 AM at the Cloud Nine Bed & Breakfast in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Please RSVP to Elaine at 618-943-5900.
A private burial will be conducted, with Reverend Tom Ryan officiating.
