Vera Stevens

Vera E. Stevens, 87, of Brazil, Indiana, formally of Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Terre Haute Union Hospital. She was born June 19, 1929 in Lawrence County, Illinois, the daughter of Arnold and Leona (Crawford) Alford. She married Paul Stevens on February 26, 1949 and he preceded her in death on August 12, 1996. Vera worked for Pioneer Finance, which later became known as Personal Finance Company in Lawrenceville, Illinois for a total of 47-1/2 years. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She volunteered for adult literacy. She was also a member, secretary, and on the board of directors for the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. Preceding Vera in death were her parents; her husband, Paul; son, Phillip David; infant son; three brothers; and five sisters. Survivors include son, Kenneth ‘Rex' Stevens of Brazil, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Donna Stevens of Woodstock, Georgia; brothers, Gary Alford of Lawrenceville, Illinois and Jack Alford and wife, Joeann of Greenville, Illinois; sisters, Shirley Woodruff of Lawrenceville, Illinois and Mildred Proffitt of Granite City, Illinois; sister-in-law, LaVaughn Whitten of Lawrenceville, Illinois; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a family friend, Mike Padgett. Funeral services will be Monday, August 8, 2016 at 1:00 PM CST at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 PM to  7:00 PM CST at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lawrenceville City Cemetery. Memorial donations in Vera's memory may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church.
