Biography
Selma "Sammie" Carroll Illyes age 85 of Vincennes, IN, a former resident of Lawrenceville, IL died Saturday evening at Bridge Pointe Health Campus.
Sammie was born December 05, 1925 in Freelandville, IN to Oscar and Dana (Jenkins) Snyder. She was married to George Cooper and he died Oct. 18, 1985. She later married Dr. Roscoe O. Illyes and he preceded her in death June, 1991. She was a graduate of Good Samaritan Hospital nursing program in 1946.
Sammie worked for many years as a registered nurse. She worked for five years in a hospital setting. She then worked for 33 years in Dr. Illyes' office. She retired in 1985. She volunteered for Friends of the Library, the local hospice group, and the high school lunch program. She also volunteered at the St. Lawrence Church where she was a member. She received the Forward Look Award which was given by the Lawrence Co. Memorial Hospital in recognition of personal service toward betterment of community health.
Selma is survived by one brother Herman and his wife Etta Snyder of Vincennes , IN and one sister Martha and her husnband SamThompson of Vincennes, IN, 3 nieces: Deborah Holmes of Rock Island, IL, Sami Westfall of Vincennes, IN, Dana Thompson of Vincennes, IN, and two nephews: Earl Snyder of Lititz, PA, and Oscar Snyder of Bowlingbrook, IL.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. (CST) at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, 1303-12th Street, Lawrenceville, IL.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 1006 Collins Street, Lawrenceville, IL.
Burial will be in Lawrenceville City Cemetery.
