Sam Herrel age 53 of Gulf Breeze, Florida passed away Friday evening after a courageous eight year fight with cancer. Sam was born September 04, 1957 in Evansville,IN. He was the son of G.William Bill and Ruth Barchet Herrel, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Deborah Ann Lawrence April 30, 1994 and she survives.
Sam is also survived by his three sisters, Jenny (Allen)Grove of Bridgeport, IL., Holly (Ed) Sotor of Elmhurst,IL. and Chrissy (Andy) Shick of rural Lawrenceville, IL. Sam also leaves behind his beloved nieces and nephews; Nick (Tammy) Grove, Jared Grove, Peyton Sotor, Breanna Shick, Jordan Shick , and great niece and nephew, Jada and Cash Grove.
Sam was a Class A PGA Golf Instructor. Sam loved golf and spent much of his adolescence being mentored by his father Bill Herrel, a PGA Golf Professional at the Lawrence County Country Club in Lawrenceville, IL. Although skilled as a player, Sam cherished the time spent instructing junior golfers. Sam continued the Herrel tradition when he left Lawrence County to pursue a golf career in Florida. He worked at various golf courses in the surrounding Florida area. His passion for teaching golf and inspiring others in the game that he so loved remained until the time of his death. Sam was a 1975 Lawrenceville High School graduate and attended Lincoln Trail College in Robinson and Lakeland Jr. College in Florida. He enjoyed various sports, and was especially fond of IU and Evansville Purple Aces. His love for animals was evident as he and his wife Debbie raised Shihtzu puppies. His current companions were Bubbles, Bubba, Daphne, Chuckles, Cinnamon, Kahlua, Chia, Midge and a cat Chyna. Sam enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Sams request was to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be conducted Saturday, September 19, 2011 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, 1303-12th Street,Lawrenceville, IL. Memorial donations may be made in Sams honor to the American Cancer Society.
