Biography
Byron Roger Lewis, age 78, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2011 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, IN.
He was the fifth child of Roger Q.M. and Chlora B. (Stiver) Lewis. He was born on July 10, 1933 in Bridgeport, IL. He attended Bridgeport Public Schools and graduated from Bridgeport Township High School. Roger attended Vincennes University and Indiana University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955 and Master of Science in education degree in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He married Barbara Lee Cox on April 15, 1956.
Roger taught in Lawrence County Rural Schools, Bridgeport Elementary, Lawrence County Special Education Cooperative, served as a Special Education Administrator and started the Title Six program in this region. He served as Regional Superintendent of Schools for 20 years. Roger was a member of the Sigma Pi Social Fraternity and Alpha Chapter Phi Delta Kappa professional educational fraternity. He was a member of the Bridgeport Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason, the Scottish Rite of Southern Illinois and Ainad Shrine. He served as president of the Lawrenceville Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served as president of the board of Cra-Wa-La Volunteers in Probation. Roger is a member of the Othniel Looker Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of Lawrenceville First Christian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder, Lawrence County Historical Society, Illinois Retired Teachers Association and the Lawrenceville Elks.
Roger had a lifelong interest in history, much like his uncle Byron Ray Lewis for whom he was a confidant and caregiver.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife Barbara of Lawrenceville, one son Greg Lewis and wife Sally of Lawrenceville, one sister Ellen Maberry of San Antonio, TX; two grandchildren Derek Lewis and Ryan Lewis and wife Ashley; as well as three great-grandchildren Alivia, Piper, and Boston Lewis.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Lawrenceville City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Lawrence County Humane Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
