Robert “Bob” Ivan Shaffer, age 92, of Pinkstaff, Illinois, passed away on April 24, 2026 at his residence. He was born June 20, 1933, the son of Delmas Ivan Shaffer and Marie Vaught Shaffer. He married Shirley Seifert Shaffer at Pleasant Ridge Church on November 21, 1953, and she survives. They shared 72 years of marriage.
Robert lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and a deep love for the outdoors. After proudly serving his country as a veteran, he built a steady and honorable career as a pipefitter at Texaco Refinery, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. Whether he was hunting, fishing, tending to his garden, or keeping a watchful eye out for birds in the trees, Robert was most at home in the outdoors. He cherished the slower moments just as much as the adventures — a crackling campfire, a home-cooked meal, and the easy company of those he loved most. A true outdoorsman in every sense, Robert's spirit was woven into the land he so deeply treasured, and his warmth and presence will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
Preceding Robert in death were his parents: Delmas and Marie Shaffer; a son, Robbie Shaffer; a brother, Harold Shaffer, and two sisters: Rosa Balding and Winifred Brown.
Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Shaffer; his children: Daniel (Tonya) Shaffer of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Susan (Steve) Shelton of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Jeff (Francie) Shaffer of Palestine, Illinois and Anita (Andy) Hogan of Charleston, Illinois; a brother, Kenneth (Loretta) Shaffer of rural Lawrenceville; a sister, Marlene Provines of Robinson, Illinois; five grandchildren: Jim Shaffer, Danielle Brangers, Kyle Shelton, Aeron Hogan and Aedrea Hogan as well as seven great-grandchildren.
A committal service with military rites will be conducted at Derr Cemetery at 11:30 am on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. A memorial service will follow the committal at 1:00 pm at the Pinkstaff Community Church. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 from 4-7 pm at the church.
