Robert Paul Garrett, age 88, of Lawrenceville, IL passed away May 10, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. Born April 21, 1920 in East Town, IN, he was the son of Pearl and Eva (Wade) Garrett. He graduated from Lawrenceville High School where he played on the football team. Bob married Norma Jeanne Southwood in 1948 and she passed away January 18, 2008. He joined the Navy prior to the United States entering WWII and served as a signal man from August 19, 1941 to December 9, 1946 aboard the USS Hornet, USS Madison, USCG Campbell, USS Washburn, and the USS New York. Bob received the following medals while in the service: American Defense, Foreign Area Campaign, American Area Campaign, European-African Area Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, and the WWII Victory Medal.After serving in the Navy, he was a Lawrenceville Police Officer/Chief and worked as a Railroad Detective. He also worked as a Lawrence County Deputy Sheriff.Bob retired from Texaco as a Zone Supervisor after working there for 29 years.  He was the Chairman of the Board of Police Commissioners for 17 years, as well as a Past-Post Commander and Life Member of the VFW, a member of the Eagles, American Legion, and the Moose.He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville, IL.Bob is survived by one son Ronald Mark Garrett of Morrisville, NC; one daughter Leah Routien of Omak, WA; and one sister Mary Dining of rural Lawrenceville, IL.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma Jeanne, and one grandson.Visitation will be Friday evening from 5 to 7 pm at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, IL.The funeral service will be Saturday at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Lawrenceville City Cemetery
