Robert C. "Bob" Smith, age 89, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014, at the United Methodist Village-North Campus in Lawrenceville. He was born December 28, 1924, in Petty Township, the son of Milton David Smith, Sr. and Lona Lucille (Judy) Smith. He married Jeanie Moore on December 20, 1952, and she survives.
Bob worked as an excavating contractor through Local 841 Operating Engineers Union out of Terre Haute, Indiana. He had the first ditching machine, the first tree transplanter and the first stump cutter in Lawrence County.
Bob was a member of New Hope Christian Church in Bridgeport.
Preceding Bob in death were his parents, one son Robert D. "Bob" Smith, and one brother Milton David Smith, Jr.
Survivors include: His wife, Jeanie Smith of Lawrenceville; one daughter, Jana Price of Lawrenceville; two grandchildren, Brandon David Smith (Deanne) of Chauncey and Bobbi Lynn Smith-Ginder (Kurt) of Olney; and four great-grandchildren, Silas David Smith and Breanne Marie Smith of Chauncey and Amelia Brooke Irene Ginder and Dane Troy William Ginder of Olney; one sister-in-law Kay Moore Przykopanski of Lincoln, Illinois; and one cousin, Clair E. "Jack" Cox of Memphis, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be at 1 PM Tuesday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.
Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Petty Cemetery.
