Robert R. "Bob" Ernst, 90, of Lawrenceville, IL, passed away Thursday September 20, 2012, at the United Methodist Village North Campus.
Born August 25, 1922, in Olney, IL he was the son of Raymond Arthur and Nellie (Gray) Ernst. On January 27, 1946, he married Martha Rucker and she preceded him in death on October 14, 2003.
Bob is survived by a daughter Sandy and husband Dee Diggs of Lawrenceville, IL, a son, Randy and wife Angie (Eck) Ernst of Katy, TX, four grandchildren, Allison Cunningham and her husband Jim of Chesterfield, MO, Gannon Diggs of Lexington, KY, Nate Ernst and wife Ana of Chicago, IL, Cameron and David Hernandez of Spring, TX, four great-grandchildren Brendan and Grace Cunningham, Allie Diggs and Gabriela Ernst.
Bob lived in Lawrence County all of his life. He graduated from Bridgeport Township High School in 1940 and spent a year at the University of Illinois. He entered the military in 1942 and served as a Captain in the United States Army during World War II and Korea. Bob worked for the Marathon Pipe Line Company for more than 46 years.
Bob was very active in the community: Mayor of Bridgeport for four years, Bridgeport City Council for eight years, Past Commander of the American Legion, Past President of Bridgeport Little League for eight years, former member of the Bridgeport Medical Center Board, Past President of Lawrence County Country Club, former member of the Board of Directors at the Heritage Bank in Lawrenceville, and a lifetime member of the Lawrenceville Elks.
Bob was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceville where a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday. Friends may call from 11 AM until the hour of service at 1 PM Monday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
