Merle E. Calvert, age 95, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois (formerly of Lawrenceville) passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Wabash General Hospital in Mt. Carmel. He was born July 2, 1917, in Lawrence County, Illinois, the son of Oran Earl and Florence Judith (Weller) Calvert. He married Jennettia Masengale on February 16, 1974, and she died December 8, 2005.
Merle began his working career owning and operating Gulf Filling Station with his brother Leon. He then worked at Smith Sales. Merle was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in Lawrenceville. He was also a member of the American Legion and Lawrenceville Civitans. Merle was an Army veteran, having served during World War II.
Preceding Merle in death were his parents, his wife Jeannettia, seven brothers, Oran, Wilbur, Maurice "Doc", Miles, James, F. Leon, and Don, and one sister Margaret Crawford.
Merle is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Lawrenceville City Cemetery with military rites.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 1407 State Street, Lawrenceville, IL with envelopes available at the funeral home.
