Maxalee Black, age 72, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana. She was born July 2, 1940, in Vincennes, Indiana, the daughter of Oliver John and Mary Lucille (Hasty) Russell. She married Vincent Black on August 5, 1959, and he died May 24, 1984.
Maxalee began her career at age 9, working for her parents at Uncle John's Kiddieland, which was located near the current Vincennes Plaza. For many years, she was well known as a sales associate at Black's Jewelry Store, which was located in Lawrenceville, Illinois. At the time of her passing, she worked as courier and guide at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana.
Maxalee was a graduate of St. Rose Academy in Vincennes, Indiana and attended Vincennes University. She was a member of the Highway Church of God. Other memberships include the Village Gardeners of Lawrenceville and Lawrenceville Delts. For many years she was a member of Cat Fanciers' Association. She, her husband, and daughter bred and showed Abyssinians and Ocicats. Some of her passions were gardening, crocheting and knitting.
Preceding Maxalee in death were her parents, her husband Vincent, and one brother Mickey Russell.
Survivors include two sons V. Stewart (Kaye) Black of Wasilla, Alaska and Stephen Black of Bloomington, IL; one daughter Stephanie (Jim) Thompson of Buena Vista, Colorado; one brother James Russell of Florida; one sister Nancy Russell of Colorado and one grandson Stewart Anthony Black of Delaware
A memorial service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday (IL time) at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM (IL time) Tuesday at the funeral home.
Private burial of cremains will be in the Lawrenceville City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: The American Cancer Society or Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation with envelopes available through the funeral home.
