Margaret Ann Stout of Herrin, Illinois died peacefully in her sleep on January 10, 2025 at Shawnee Senior Living in Herrin, Illinois, but was active in her 96 years of life.
She was born on October 31, 1928 in Lawrence County, Illinois. The daughter of Herbert Albert and Sara (Lumbert) Gilliatt. She married Howard N. Stout on February 3, 1948, and he passed away on January 28, 2019.
Margaret was preceded in death by her three siblings, Henry Albert Gilliatt, Robert Ray Gilliatt, and Gene Gale Gilliatt; as well as her loving husband of 70 years, Howard Nuttall Stout. They were married at the Methodist Church in Bridgeport, Illinois in 1948. Margaret is survived by Son, Larry A. Stout and Amy (Heidbreder) Stout of Marion; Daughter, Vicki L. Stout of Vincennes, Indiana; Grandchildren, Cullen and Dakota Stout of Marion, Illinois and Melany Holmes of Bridgeport, Illinois; Great-Grandchildren, Danielle and Shelby Russell of Bridgeport, Illinois; Great-Great-Grandchildren, Naomi Lee Russell and Charlie Grace Collins; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Margaret's first occupation was as a telephone operator. She later became a bookkeeper for Suttle. She was also the backbone and bookkeeper for her husband, Howard, and his Pioneer seed corn business. It was not uncommon to see Margaret driving a tractor or grain truck to the grain elevator.
She enjoyed a good hunt for morel mushrooms at Red Hill State Park, frying up green tomatoes, and enjoying a lunch from her expansive garden. Her specialty was chocolate no bake cookies. She loved her chocolate. Margaret was loved by all who knew her. She was a loving and devoted spouse, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, who valued her family above all. She enjoyed traveling with her late Husband, Howard, in their RV, and they visited most all of the United States. She enjoyed baking and had specialty recipes that her family loved. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville and was often found volunteering to help in the kitchen for church activities.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 1:00pm CST at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois, and may be viewed with the following link: https://www.facebook.com/emmonsmaceysteffey . Visitation is also Wednesday from 12:00 noon until the service hour of 1:00pm CST at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Lawrenceville City Cemetery.
