Karen L. Akers

Karen L. Akers, age 55, of rural Sumner passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Lawrence Community Health Care in Bridgeport. She was born February 5, 1955 in Lawrence County, the daughter of Charles and Ida Mae (Tullis) Piper.Survivors include one son, Jared Akers of Lebanon, IN; one daughter Dana Akers of Noblesville, IN; two brothers Wayne Piper and Fred Piper, both of Sumner; and one sister Roberta Brody of Surprise, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents.Karen was a member of Central Christian Church in Lawrenceville. She worked 20 years as a secretary for Trinity Lutheran Church in Olney, IL. Karen enjoyed gardening, collecting books and antiques, as well as researching ancestry.Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Sivert-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Sumner. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery.Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or to the American Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
