Joy L. Baker

Joy L. Baker, age 77, of Calhoun, Illinois passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, Illinois. She was born on November 14, 1943 in Woodstock, Illinois, the daughter of David Louis and Josephine Violet (Yepsen) Davis. She married Gary Baker on July 31, 1975 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Olney, and he survives.

Joy was a 1961 Marengo County High School graduate and a 1965 graduate of Augustana College at Rock Island, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She was granted a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) fellowship to do graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, where she received her Master’s Degree in 1969. With a fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, she continued study at the University of Wisconsin. She spent a year of internship work at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1971, she earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wisconsin. As a Clinical Psychologist, Joy worked for Southeastern Illinois Mental Health Center in Olney, at several hospitals, owned her own private practice in Olney, worked for social security disability, and in the prison system.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Gary; three children, John (Heather) Baker and children, Wyatt, Ruby, and Cora of Calhoun, Illinois, Caryl (Jeremy) Buttrum and children, Jarett, Della, Gavin, and Eirlys of Berryville, Illinois, and Catherine (Brandon) Hixon and children, Bowen, Rue, and Landry of Sumner, Illinois; and two brothers, David L. (Carol) Davis of Kaukauna, Wisconsin and Larry T. (Mary) Davis of Davenport, Iowa.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 6:00 PM at the Berryville Christian Church. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the church. Interment of ashes will be at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Berryville Christian Church or the Berryville Community Center. Sivert-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Sumner, Illinois is in charge of the arrangements.
