John R. Wampler, Sr., age 81, of Robinson, Illinois passed away June 23, 2017 at the Magnolia Center at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson, Illinois, after a long battle with dementia. He was born February 26, 1936 in Lawrence County, Illinois, the son of Samuel and Dorothy (Malone) Wampler. He married Donna M. Moan, the love of his life, on May 27, 1956 at the Methodist Parsonage, in Sumner, Illinois.
John graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1955. He served in the United States Army for two years before being honorably discharged, with the rank of Specialist 4th class from Fort Benning, Georgia. He was baptized and began his Christian life in the United Methodist Church, Birds, Illinois; transferring membership to First Christian Church of Oblong, until retirement, now a member of Aurora Christian Church, Aurora, Kentucky. He was a deacon and served faithfully at his church homes. He stayed busy enjoying his retirement fishing, boating, and doing what he could at the Wampler Kentucky Lake Home. He loved family and friends coming for visits. He was an avid hunter, also spending time with he and Donna's younger siblings. He was a most happy man, enjoying every day of his entire life. John loved the children in his life, all of them as well as his extended family.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Julia Ethel Wampler; and in-laws, Donald and Geneva (Perrott) Moan.
John is survived by his wife, Donna Moan; one son, Jon Aaron Wampler and wife, Mercades, of Robinson, Illinois; one daughter, Jennifer Lynn Wampler of Robinson, Illinois; one brother, Bill Wampler and wife, Brenda, of Robinson, Illinois; three sisters, Jane Erton and husband, Ken, of Robinson, Illinois, Susie Wilson and husband, Don, of Clearwater, Florida, and Samy Kay Weck and husband, Terry, of Annapolis, Illinois; six grandchildren, Jereme York, and wife, Brianne, of Benton, Kentucky; Shandra York of Robinson, Illinois; Nicholas Wampler and friend, Kylie Wisdom and Jalyne Long all of Robinson, Illinois, Ariana Candler of Vincennes, Indiana; and Brendan McGuire of Evansville, Indiana; and three great-grandchildren, Kaea York and Brylee York of Benton, Kentucky, and Jaxon Wesley of Robinson, Illinois; special friends, Scott and Kim Long of Robinson, Illinois; as well as a host of dearly loved nieces and nephews.
John was first a family man, a business person, owning a Gulf Service Station, then the Robinson Napa Auto Supply for 30 years. John was a man of integrity and honesty in all area of life. He was a former member of the Robinson, Illinois Chamber of Commerce; American Business Association, and the Elks Club. He was a supporter of the Oblong and Robinson Schools.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 12:30 PM CST at the Lawrenceville City Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM CST at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Services will be officiated by Dee Wolfe. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John's memory may be made to Donna Wampler. She will be using the money to purchase tutorial videos to help caregivers and nursing homes providing special care to Alzheimer's patients. These will be made available to any facility for workshops at local libraries or anyone interested in Alzheimer's care.
