John Grove died peacefully on Monday morning June 27th, 2016 in Malta, IL at the age of 80. John was born in Sumner, IL on January 4th, 1936 to Henry and Lillian Rebecca (Bennett) Grove. He graduated from Sumner High School. John was fortunate to be married to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life Mary (Shank) for 59 years. Together they raised two daughters that he cherished and lived happily ever after. He enjoyed farming, camping, and all things outdoors. He spent many hours taking care of his animals which included dogs, cats, horses, peacocks, turkeys, donkeys, chickens and even a stray pig he called "Homer" that he once found in a field. He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church of Sumner. If he wasn't hauling grain or driving a truck, John would spend time fixing a tractor or building a wagon, cart or fence. He enjoyed teaching his daughters and grandkids the country way of living...things like riding horses, donkeys or snowmobiles, how to shoot a BB gun, appreciate a good western movie and to listen to polka music. He also loved to enter his homemade pony wagon into local parades and competing in horse shows. He is survived by his wife Mary, two daughters; Marguerite (Kirk) Bock of DeKalb and Joyce Grove of Malta. Three grandchildren; Jennifer (John) Hall of Sycamore, Eric (Taryn) Bock of Sycamore and Zachary Bock. Four great granddaughters; Isabella, Evelyn, Hazel and Meeka. One sister, Ethel Mae Routien of Sumner, IL along with several nieces and nephews. His furry babies PJ, Sam and Pepper along with his two ponies; Pete & Misty. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter. A visitation will be held at Sivert-Macey Funeral Home located at 509 S. Christy Ave, Sumner IL on Saturday, July 2nd from 10am - 12pm. Immediately following there will be a Graveside Ceremony at Chauncey Cemetery in Lawrence County. The family would like to thank the care providers at KishHealth System Hospice who worked so hard to make John comfortable in his final days.
