Joe A. Smith

Joe A. Smith, 76, of Chauncey, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at his residence. He was born October 31, 1939 in Lawrence County, Illinois, the son of RJ ‘Bud' and Mary E. (Miles) Smith. He married Betty Thacker on June 12, 1960 and she survives. Joe was a farmer all of his life. He enjoyed doing excavation work; as well as driving his bulldozer and truck. He was a member of Bethany Christian Church and served as deacon and elder for several years. Preceding him in death was his father. Survivors include his mother, Mary, of Lawrenceville, Illinois; wife, Betty; sons, Gregory and his wife, Elaine, and Randy and his wife, Janette all of Chauncey, Illinois; four grandchildren, Robert Smith, and his wife, Brooke, Rachel Adams and her husband, Justin, Justin Smith, and Clayton Smith; and one great-grandchild, Sophie Smith. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be Charlottesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joe's memory may be made to the Oblong Children's Christian Home.
