James “Jim” Franklin Akers, age 70, of Sumner, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana. He was born on October 14, 1955 in Lawrence County, Illinois, the son of Franklin and Margaret Smith Akers. Jim married Susan Rousey Akers and she preceded him in death.
Jim worked as a state employee at Red Hill State Park, where he served as a dedicated park ranger. He was strong in his faith and was baptized at the park he loved so dearly. Jim enjoyed camping, fishing with his sons, and listening to and playing music—especially his cherished record collection. He also found great fulfillment in working on bicycles and small engine repairs. In his leisure time, he enjoyed shooting pool and spending time with his family, especially during gatherings that brought everyone together. Jim also loved relaxing while watching some of his favorite shows, including MASH*, The Andy Griffith Show, and Happy Days, as well as classic westerns such as Bonanza.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents; his daughter, Wendy Dunfee-Akers; his brothers, Zebedee Akers, Paul Akers, and Phillip Akers.
Survivors include his sons, Timothy and Andrea Akers of Lawrenceville, Illinois, and Patrick Akers of Newburgh, Indiana; his brother, Darrell Akers of Sin City, Florida; his sister-in-law, Donna Akers; his grandchildren, Dunncan Akers, Payton Fiscus, Brayton Akers, Kalob Akers, Paige Akers, Roslyn May, Chloe May, Jacson Dunfee, and Liam Schnell; his great-grandchildren, Jacob Michel, Brentley Michel, Aurora Akers, Kamdyn Akers, Ameilla Akers, and Averie Akers.
