James Joseph Courtney

Biography James Joseph Courtney, age 82, of Lawrenceville, IL, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville. He was born January 11, 1930 in Vincennes, IN the son of Raymond A. and Alice (Whitmer) Courtney. He married Dorothy Stanhope on April 5, 1951 and she passed away February 27, 2011. Jim was a 1948 Lincoln High School Graduate. He was employed with the Unit #20 School District in various capacities. In 1957, he began his career as a 4th grade teacher and retired as Superintendent of Unit #20. After retirement, he returned to Unit #20 as a school bus driver. Jim was a Navy veteran, having served during the Korean War on the USS Shangri-La. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville. Other memberships include the American Legion where he was a past Commander, Elks, Moose, a 32 degree Mason with Vincennes Lodge #1, served on the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital Board for 30+ years, the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital Endowment and Development Foundation, was a past recipient of the Forward Look Award in 2002, a member of Harmony Society in Vincennes, served on the Lawrence County Board, and Tax Increment Finance Board. He was an active leader with Boy Scouts and received numerous scouting awards including the Silver Beaver Award. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Dorothy. Survivors include one daughter Liz (Charles) Bootman, two sons David (Joni) Courtney and Jeff (Kathy) Courtney all of Lawrenceville, IL, and five grandchildren Shana (Kevin) Strange, Brian Courtney, Nick Courtney, Jesse Courtney and Katie Jo Courtney. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Friday at the funeral home. Burial in Lawrenceville City Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials may be made to the Lawrence County Ambulance Service or the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital Endowment and Development Foundation with envelopes available at the funeral home.
