James Brian, age 78, of Sumner, Illinois, passed away Monday, April 27, 2026, in Sumner. He was born October 29, 1947, in Sumner, Illinois, the son of Emmett L. Brian and Martha L. Wagner Brian. He married Stella Jackson on October 9, 1971, and she preceded him in death April 19, 2024.
James was a hardworking and skilled man who devoted his life to farming and mechanics. He began his career working at a sawmill right out of high school and went on to lend his talents to several local businesses, including Beasley Car Dealership in Sumner, Groff Equipment in Lawrenceville, and Davis Tractor. In addition to his work, James provided transportation for local Amish families, a role he carried out with care and dedication.
A man of strong faith, James was a member of Eureka Church of Christ, where he faithfully served as a Deacon. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and had a deep appreciation for Ford tractors and Chevrolet vehicles, interests that reflected both his profession and his passion. James will be remembered for his strong work ethic and his servant’s heart.
Preceding James in death were his parents, wife, Stella, and brother, Daniel Brian.
Survivors include: son, Nathan Brian of Sumner; siblings, David Brian of Sumner, and Larry (Karla) Brian of Olney.
Graveside services will be Friday, May 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Eureka Cemetery, south of Claremont.
