Hugh Francis Mayr,DDS January 20, 1921 to March 12, 2010Hugh Francis Mayr was born Jan, 20, 1921 in Chicago,Illinois., the son of Dorothy Porte and Hugo P. Mayr. Hugh has one sister, Annette Fiskow of Milwaukee,Wis.He attended Central YMCA College of Chicago and Northwestern Universitys School of Dentistry, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. After completing dental school, he enlisted in the Army in 1944 during World War II. He was stationed at Camp Ellis in northern Illinois and then Fort Sill,Okla., where he met his future wife, Lois who was a dental assistant. He was stationed overseas with the 30th Evacuation Hospital in the Philippines, first on Mindanao, then in Manila and Leyte. After the war, he was posted to Army hospitals on the Japanese island of Hokkaido and in Yokohama,Japan. He returned home in September, 1946 leaving the Army at the rank of captain.Lois Hunter and Hugh were married Aug. 23, 1947. Their first child, Bill Mayr currently living in Columbus,Ohio. Their second child Dorothy Alsman is currently living in Lawrenceville,Il. Four grandchildren Kris Chelsvig, Abbi LeBeane, Catherine Bowditch and Jim Mayr. He is also survivied by four greatgrandchildren, Haley Chelsvig, Emma Chelsvig, Kelsey LeBeane and Reese LeBeane.Hugh opened a dental practice in Evanston, Illinois, where he practiced for about five years before moving to Lawrenceville, Il., to join the practice of Dr. Louis Schroeder in 1951. He later opened his own practice and in the mid 1970s bought the building at 600 12th St., where he continued his practice until retirement in 2004. His 60 years in dentistry made him one of the longest-practicing dentists in Illinois. He was much loved by his patients, often seeing them on weekends and into the late-night hours in emergencies. Dr. Mayr served as president of the Lawrence Township High School Board of Education, president of the Lawrence County Senior Citizens and was a member of the Wabash Valley Area Agency on Aging. He also was a lifetime member of the Lawrenceville Kiwanis Club and worked with the Boy Scouts in Lawrenceville. He was a faithful member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where he served as parish-council president and trustee. Dr. Mayr was a supporter of charitable, medical, religious and patriotic organizations. He also was an avid hiker and a keen competitor in Scrabble and chess. He and Lois were married for nearly 61 years until her death in 2008.A mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday 11:00 A.M. at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceville. Friends may call Saturday morning 9:00 a.m. till 10:45 A.M. at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Il. Military rites will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion. Burial will be in the Lawrenceville City Cemetery.Memorial donation may be made to the Lawrenceville Senior Citizens located 1705 12th Street Lawrenceville, Il. or the St. Lawrence Catholic Church located at 1006 Collins Ave Lawrenceville, Il.
