Hayward Lawrence Gregory

July 16, 1915 — May 30, 2011

Hayward Lawrence Gregory, age 95, of Lawrenceville passed away Monday May 30, 2011 at United Methodist Village-North Campus. Born July 16, 1915 in Wayne County, IL he was the son of L.W. and Minnie (Cunningham) Gregory. He married Marie K. Reel December 23, 1936 and she passed away March 1, 1999. Hayward owned and operated Gregory Gravel from 1939 to present. In 1939 he purchased Russellville pit; 1942 the Levee ground was purchased; 1959 the Patrick ground, which is now the Rod and Gun Club; 1986 the Scales ground which is now Gregory Gravel and in 1993 he purchased the Racop Ground. The tradition continues. Now the business is being operated by a grandson Greg Davis and a great-grandson Ryan Davis. Hayward was a member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church. Hayward was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, and one brother Homer. Survivors include two daughters Barbara Copp (Richard) of Highland, IN; Linda Davis (Larry) of rural Lawrenceville; nine grandchildren Greg Davis (Janet), Sandra Potts, Glenda Davis, Scott Davis (Tammy), Cindy Greentree (Terry), Cheri Spahn (Kelly), Rick Copp (Anne), Patty Croft (Ken), Mike Copp (Stephanie); 17 great-grandchildren Ashli Wesley (Ryan), Ryan Davis, Staci Potts, Matthew Potts (Melissa), Kyle Davis, Kara Davis, Brandon Blackwell, Nathon Blackwell, Dalton Spahn, Corey Copp, Kristin Copp, Brittney Croft, Courtney Croft, Breanne Copp, Gregory Copp, Tayler Greentree and Riley Greentree; and three great-great-grandchildren Austin and Hannah Wesley and one expected. Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at First United Methodist Church in Bridgeport. Burial will be in Lawrenceville City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. Memorials may be made to Bridgeport Senior Citizens or to the First United Methodist Church in Bridgeport with envelopes available through the funeral home.
