Harry Smith, age 93, of Olney, IL (formerly of rural Sumner), passed away Monday, September 30, 2013, at the United Methodist Village in Lawrenceville. He was born May 7, 1920, in Flora, IL, the son of Harry and Cora (Sparlin) Smith. He married Ethel I. Goff on December 17, 1940.
Harry worked many jobs after serving in Germany with the Army in World War II during the Battle of the Bulge. He worked at Caterpillar, Servel, Bunny Bread, State of Illinois Highway Department, owned and operated Olney Taxi Service, worked as a truck driver and farmer. Harry retired from AMF in Olney where he was a Plating Supervisor. He also bred champion race horses. His memberships included the Moose, VFW, and American Legion.
Preceding Harry in death were his parents, his wife Ethel in 2009, one son Charles in 2004, one daughter Esther Burbank in 2000, two brothers Harold and Henry "Hank" Smith, one sister Marie Wickstrom Voyles and a special companion Vickie Hahn.
Survivors include four sons James M. Smith of Highland, IL, Harry O. Smith of Bridgeport, John S. Smith of Sumner, and Joe A. Smith of Lawrenceville; three daughters Ruth A. Allison of Robinson, Karen Westall of Lawrenceville and Mary J. Brunson of Sumner, 20 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM Saturday at Sivert-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Sumner.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM Saturday at the funeral home
Burial will be in Sumner Cemetery with military rites.
