Harold "Sock" Nelson Chansler left this earth to be with his heavenly father, Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
Harold was born December 24, 1923, to William Washington Chansler and Elizabeth E. (Nash) Chansler in Bridgeport, IL. He was 88 years old.
Harold married his beautiful bride Edith Frances Miller Chansler on June 16, 1944 in Oakland, California, before he shipped out to sea.
Harold lived his entire life in or near Lawrenceville, IL except for the thirty months he spent in the United States Navy during World War II. Most of the thirty months was spent in the Pacific. He was involved in the Battle of Leyte. Harold was stationed on the USS Bush until it was sunk towards the end of the war, then transferred to the USS Columbus. Harold retired from Texaco Oil Refinery. Harold and his wife Frances were active members of the HiWay Church of God, Lawrenceville, IL. Harold was a member of the American Legion and a past member of the VFW.
Harold was the proud father of five sons, Harold N. Jr (Pat), Larry R. (Rita), Robert E, Steven L (Molly Jo) and Charles L. "Chuck" (Vera); one daughter Rita Diane (Pete) Davis.
Harold cherished his grandchildren, Marty (Jamie) Chansler, Troy Chansler, Jeremiah (Nicole) Chansler, Robert (Anne) Rothschild, Shannon (Mike) Meehan, Angela (Brad) Getts, Cassandra (Joel) Mills, Jody (Kim) Chansler, Zach (Jennifer) Chansler, Brad (Abby) Kuhlig, Lacie J. Kuhlig-Harrison, Nathan Chansler, Tiffany Chansler and step-granddaughter Jessica (Jason) Edwards.
Harold especially loved and enjoyed his great-grandchildren Matthew, Adam, Owen, Taylor, Riley, Jaidyn, Jaxtyn, and Makeilah Chansler, Gracie Rothschild, Logan, Morgan, Marissa Meehan, Zaykk Mills, T.J. and Haley Getts, Naleigha Harrison, and step-great-grandchildren Blaze, Trevor, and Ivie Edwards.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Harold N. Jr., and infant son Robert Eugene, two sisters Marie Chansler and Nellie Chansler Summers Crawford, and seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester (Viola), Earl (Ruth), infant brother Amos, Delbert (Dorothy), Carl (Helen), Raymond (Hazel), and Sam (Betty) Chansler, and infant grandson baby Chansler.
Harold left behind many loving nieces and nephews, which include Denise Martin and special friends Pablo and Erika Valadez, Betty Milligan, Chris Hancock, and special friend and pastor, Rev. Bill Flynn.
The funeral will be 2:00 pm Monday, January 16, 2012, at the HiWay Church of God, Rt. 50, Lawrenceville, IL.
Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the hour of service at 2:00 pm at the church.
Burial will be in Cresthaven Memorial Park Cemetery, Claremont, IL with military graveside honors by the American Legion and VFW.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Southeastern Illinois or to the HiWay Church of God. Envelopes will be made available.
