Harold E. Benson, 89, of rural Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Aperion Care in Bridgeport, Illinois. He was born April 26, 1927 in Lawrence County, Illinois, the son of Homer and Anna (Brown) Benson. He married Janette Null on December 24, 1945 and she preceded him in death on February 27, 2003.
Harold was a lifelong farmer and retired from Texaco Refinery after 31 years of employment. He served for many years on the LHS/Unit 20 School Board, as chairman of the Lawrence County Board, as supervisor for the Russellville Township, and as officer for the OCAW. He was an avid fan of the Lawrenceville and Red Hill boys and girls sports; as well as the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a lifelong member of the Allison Prairie Church of the Brethren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Janette; son, Bradley Benson; and sister, Norma Ditch.
Survivors include his son, Steven Benson and wife, Janet, of Lawrenceville, Illinois; daughter, Cheryl Hahn and husband, Robert, of Champaign, Illinois; sister, Lois Benson of rural Lawrenceville, Illinois; four grandchildren, Curtis Benson and wife, Jessica, Brooke Lockhart and husband, Luke, Kyle Hahn, and Sarah McPhee and husband, Mitch; eight great-grandchildren, Cade Benson, Colin Benson, Trent Benson, Nora Lockhart, Lucy Lockhart, Jane Lockhart, Matthew Lockhart, and Lane McPhee; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 23, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Allison Prairie Church of the Brethren. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Harold's memory may be made to the Centerville Cemetery Fund.
