Gail Bennett, 85, of rural Sumner, passed away Sunday August 16, 2009 at Lawrence Community Healthcare in Bridgeport, IL.Born July 22, 1924 he was the son of Leroy and Grace (Sanders) Bennett. Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his wife Verna, who passed away February 2, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Woodrow and Claude, and his sister Nola Mae VanGilder.Mr. Bennett served in the US Army and was part of the occupational force in Germany an the end of WWII. He spent his life as a full time farmer in Sumner, IL. He was very active in the Lawrence County communities. He served on school boards, the hospital board, and was a leader in the Rich Law Service Company. He was also Trustee of the Sumner Cemetery and involved in other community organizations. He was a faithful member of the Beulah United Methodist Church, where he was active in teaching and Christian leadership.Surviving are a son: Harvey and his wife Ella "Cookie" Bennett of Tallahassee, FL, 4 grandchildren: Peter of Tallahassee, FL, Betsy and her husband Gerson and their son Jayden all of Marion, IN, Andrew and his wife Elissa and their children Joshua and Jonathon of Pewaukee, WI, and a daughter Jamie of Fort Wayne, IN.The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:00am at Beulah United Methodist Church south of Sumner, IL. Burial will follow at Sumner Cemetery with full Military Rites.
