Don Piper

Lloyd Donald "Don" Piper, age 84, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville surrounded by family. Don was born February 27, 1929 in Lawrenceville to Lloyd B. and Daisy E. (Norton) Piper. Don was married to the love of his life, Ellen L. (Seward), for 63 adventurous years. Don graduated from Lawrenceville High School and worked at Smith Sales & Service. Beginning in 1952, Don served in the Korean War and earned numerous citations in the 366th Engineering Aviation Battalion followed by six years in the Reserves. Some of Don's war exploits were featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In 1954, he went into partnership with his brother, Earl, farming the family's property in Lawrence County. Don's experience as a heavy equipment operator in Korea made him a natural for mastering all of the family farm equipment. Don served as president of the Lawrence County HIA Blue Cross-Blue Shield office for 15 years, was a trustee of the Lawrence-Allison Volunteer Fire Protection District, and a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Elks, and Farm Bureau. Don & Ellen's many adventures included extensive travel with the Holiday Rambler Camping Club, venturing to every corner of the United States and much of Canada. He enjoyed visiting their daughter and granddaughter in St. Louis as well as annual trips to Florida in their motor home where they would winter every year. Don is survived by his wife Ellen; their children: J.D. and his wife Becky of rural Lawrenceville, Cynthia Ann Rexford and her husband Peter of St. Louis; a grandchild, Katherine Ann Postel of Kansas City; a brother Earl E. and his wife Janet of rural Lawrenceville and a sister Norma J. McKee and her husband Eugene of Camp Verde, AZ. Visitation will be Monday from 11:00AM to 2:00PM followed by a service at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. Memorials may be made to United Methodist Church - Lawrenceville with envelopes available at the funeral home.
