Dennis Bowser

Dennis Bowser, age 78, of Sumner, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2026, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana. He was born September 2, 1947 in Centralia, Illinois, the son of Robert Leroy Bowser and Opal Biggs Bowser. He married Delores A. Barker on August 25, 1968, and she survives.

Dennis devoted his life to education, community service, and his faith. He was employed in education for 34 years, spending the final 33 years of his career with Red Hill Community Unit School District #10, where he taught eighth-grade mathematics and positively influenced generations of students. In addition to his classroom responsibilities, Dennis dedicated several years to coaching fifth and sixth grade boys’ basketball, junior high boys’ basketball, and boys’ and girls’ track, leaving a lasting impact on countless young athletes. He was a faithful member of Sumner Community Church, where he actively served in numerous ministries, including founding Junior Church and Noisy Offerings. His commitment to missions led him to serve others through trips to Guatemala and Africa. Dennis was a member of Sumner Masonic Lodge #344, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Sumner Ruritan Club. He also faithfully served the Sumner community as both mayor and city alderman. Above all, Dennis cherished time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, taking family vacations, and helping those in need. His life was marked by service, generosity, and a genuine concern for others, and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Preceding Dennis in death were his parents; in-laws, Leonard and Pauline Barker; William and Beatrice Barker, Sally Austin, and Terry Barker.

Survivors include, his wife, Delores; children, Robert L. (Amy) Bowser of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Denise (Vergil) Jerrell of Bargersville, Indiana; in-laws, Jerry and Judy Paddick, Larry and Barbara Barker, David Austin; grandchildren, J. D. Bowser, Brendan Bowser, Jacob Jerrell, Andrew Jerrell; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 24, 2026, 10:30 a.m. at Sumner Community Church in Sumner, Illinois. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Crest Haven Memorial Park in Claremont. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sumner Community Church (Victorious Children’s Home in Kenya) or Allendale Education Foundation.
