Catherine Louise Karns

Catherine Louise Karns, age 85, of Sumner, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at her residence. She was born on February 25, 1939 in Oblong, Illinois, the daughter of James A. and Catherine (Pine) Snider. She married Michael E. Karns on February 28, 1958, and he survives.

Louise graduated in 1957 from Oblong High School. After she married, she spent the next 20 years traveling the world as a military wife; and in 1977, they settled in Sumner. She was employed by Dean Waldrop’s local grocery story and then by First National Bank of Sumner for 20 years, until her retirement in 2002. She was a former member of the Prior Grove Church in Oblong. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, quilting, and golfing.

Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers, Richard Snider and Michael Snider.

Survivors include her husband, Michael; three children born in three different countries (U.S., Taiwan, and Germany), Steven Karns and wife, Gayla of Flora, Illinois, Brian Karns and wife, Gloria of St. Cloud, Florida, and Kelly Blain and husband, Shannon of Kathleen, Georgia; three brothers, Arthur Snider, Thomas Snider, and Jerry Snider all of Oblong, Illinois; one sister, Barbara Weck of Hidalgo, Illinois; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 12:00 PM CST at the Sivert-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Sumner, Illinois. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the service hour of 12:00 PM CST at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery.
