Carl Smith

October 21, 1946 — November 9, 2014

Carl Nelson Smith, age 68, passed from this life at 5:00 a.m., Sunday, November 9, 2014, at his rural Sumner home. He was born in rural Lawrence County on October 21, 1946, to Scott Smith and Berniece Pinkstaff Smith. Preceding him in death were his parents. Carl is survived by his brothers, Harold Smith of Martinsville and David (Hope) Smith of Kalamazoo, Michigan, along with nieces and nephews and his best friend, Karen Ferguson-Bogenschutz, Bridgeport, whose family embraced Carl as one of their own. He loved his family, friends and his canine companions, Buck and Man. Carl served his country in the Army in Vietnam and was a member of the VFW. He was also a long-time member of the Island Free Methodist Church. Carl had a long productive career at the Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) for over 30 years. Carl was an automobile enthusiast and enjoyed working on his myriad vehicles. Although quiet by nature, he was an excellent singer who enjoyed all music, especially gospel songs where he lifted his voice to praise his Lord. There will be no visitation, but friends are invited to celebrate Carl's life at a graveside service on Wednesday, November 12, at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill (Petty) cemetery. Pastor Adam Strauser will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Smith, David Smith, Aaron Ferguson, Jimmie Akers, Ron Reese, Grant Reese, Hayden Reese, Kevin Parker, Alex Parker, and Matthew Paddick. "People who know little are usually great talkers, while men who know much say little.".....Jean-Jacques Rousseau Sivert-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Sumner is handling the arrangements
