Barbara M. Barkony, age 79 passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012 at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville, IL. She was born December 7, 1932 in Sheboygan, WI, the daughter of Dr. William G. and Eunice (Selmer) Meier. She married Donald W. Barkony March 21, 1959.
Barbara earned her Bachelor of Education Degree at the University of Michigan and then earned her Master of Education Degree at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH.
Barbara worked as a teacher, having taught in Shaker Heights, OH and Sacramento, CA. She worked with Global Education and was the Director at the Ecumenical International Institute in Chicago, IL and worked with Steering Community International Exposition of rural development for 26 years. She taught courses in rural development in New Delhi India and Brussels, Belgium, Stockholm, Sweden besides countless communities in the entire United States. She also had the honor of visiting the Taj Mahal in India.
Her memberships included Gamma Phi Beta, Lawrence County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Reading and Drama Club and AAUW. Barbara worked with the Institute of Cultural Affairs performing community work and development and served on the Lawrence Township Library Board.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and one brother William G. Meier, III.
Survivors include her husband Donald W. Barkony of Lawrenceville; two daughters Elizabeth Barkony-Skomski of San Diego, CA and Susan Lathrop of Minneapolis, MN and grandchildren Tatiana Skomski and Samantha Lynn Lathrop.
The body is being cremated. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home, 1303-12th Street, Lawrenceville, IL.
A memorial service will be 11:00 am Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church,1015-12th Street, Lawrenceville, IL.
