Alfred Powell, age 94, of Lawrenceville, IL went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 10, 2011. He was born November 15, 1916 in Vincennes, IN the son of Mode Powell, Sr. and Carrie Ellen (Pea) Powell. He married Maxine Hale on June 8, 1941 and she survives.
Alfred was a retired farmer. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville and was a long-time volunteer fireman for the Lawrence-Allison Fire Protection District.
Alfred was a "people person" who enjoyed being around others, especially his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and spending time with his Camp Group. His love of people was demonstrated throughout retirement as he enjoyed working for almost 20 years taking tickets at Disney World/Epcot Center where he was able to meet people from all over the world. Alfred enjoyed woodworking and was quite innovative and creative with this hobby. He designed wooden game boards and spent many hours playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Rev. Mode Powell, Jr., Tom Powell and Rev. James Powell.
Survivors include his wife Maxine of Lawrenceville, two sons Charlie Powell (Ruth) of Winchester, IL, and Dan Powell (Bobbie) of Lawrenceville, IL; one daughter Sue Klein (Steve) of Vincennes, IN; three sisters Margaret Phillips and Susan Powell both of Muncie, IN and Treva Iaun (Ward) of Springfield, IL; six grandchildren David Powell (Jolene) of Wheaton, IL, Matt Powell (Beth) of Ankeny, IA, Carrie Roach (David) of Brownsburg, IN, Brian Klein (Maria) of Noblesville, IN, Bill Powell (Stacy) of Lawrenceville and Mark Powell of Springfield, IL, as well as 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM (CST) Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville, IL with his nephew, Rev. Charles Powell officiating. Burial will follow in May Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 PM (CST) Wednesday at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, IL
Memorials may be made to United Methodist Village-North Campus or the Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church with envelopes available through the funeral home.
