America Lewis Obituary
America VenDetta Lewis, age 95, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville, Illinois.
She was born December 27, 1923 in Lawrenceville, Illinois, the daughter of Anderson and Juanita (Casey) Lyles. She married Raymond Lewis on July 02, 1948 and he preceded her in death on October 26, 1987.
America worked at the Golden Rule Insurance company for 30 years as a supervisor of new business. Following her retirement from Golden Rule she worked for Dr. Larry Herron in his medical office and at his Aerobic Institute of Medicine for 15 years. She was a member of the St. James AME church, where she served as a trustee for 25 years. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed bowling, the Chicago Cubs, and the Bunco Ladies Group. America never met a stranger. She was a Genuine Lady.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, one daughter, Anita R. Henry, two brothers Samuel and Irvin Lyles, and one sister, Alice Kay Lyles and one daughter in law Tamra Lewis.
Survivors include her three sons: William Chester Lewis and wife Marlene of rural Lawrenceville, Illinois, Milton Ray Lewis of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Dennis Byron Lewis of Lawrenceville, Illinois, a daughter, Jamie Lockard and husband Mark of Lawrenceville, Illinois, nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday March 2, 2019 at 11:00am at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. Burial will be at the Portee Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be given to the Lawrenceville Senior Citizens.
