Wendell Weger Steffey Obituary

Wendell Weger Steffey, age 91, of Flat Rock, Illinois, passed on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at home, with his family by his side. He was born on November 28, 1932 in Lawrence County, the son of Paul E. and Dolphine (Weger) Steffey. He married Floye M. Belcher on January 30, 1953, and she survives. Together they shared a life for over 71 years. Their love and devotion for each other was evident throughout the years.

Wendell was a lifelong farmer; having farmed with his father, son, Doyle and grandson, Carter. He was a member of the Birds Free Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 70 plus years and served as a trustee. He preached for many years as a lay speaker in local churches. Wendell was a hard worker with a good work ethic; as well as a kind, loving, and generous man, with compassion for others. He was youthful at heart, always enjoyed playing sports with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at family gatherings. His family will remember his love and support as a husband, father, and Grandpa “Bats”.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother and sister-in-law, Mandell and Hazel Steffey; one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Don Young; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Loren and Beverly Belcher; and one son, Lindell W. Steffey.

Survivors include his wife, Floye; three children, Peggy Crawford and husband, Edward, Doyle Steffey and wife, Jeanne, and Shannon Steffey and husband, Donald Decker; one sister-in-law, Vonda Arthur and husband, Jim all of Flat Rock, Illinois; five grandchildren, Kristi Gray and husband, Kyle, Andrew Crawford and wife, Johanna, Ryan Crawford and wife, Jessica, Carter Steffey, and Casey Davidson and husband, Clint; and ten great-grandchildren, Nicole Gray and fiancé, Hayden, Jared Gray, Hunter Gray, Simon Crawford, Elise Crawford, Aiden Crawford, Max Crawford, Miles Crawford, Fletcher Davidson, and Greer Davidson.
